The tournament will see India defend their title in a competition that promises intense action and historic debuts.

The Qualification Story: A Global Game

The journey to the 2026 World Cup saw a mix of automatic qualifications and thrilling regional battles, ensuring representation from cricket's established powers and its emerging forces.

Automatic Entrants and Rankings

  • Hosts and Top Finishers: As co-hosts, India and Sri Lanka automatically secured their spots. They were joined by the top seven nations from the 2024 T20 World Cup (excluding the hosts), namely Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, England, South Africa, United States, and West Indies.

  • Ranking Rewards: Based on the T20I rankings as of June 30, 2024, three high-ranking teams that hadn't otherwise qualified—Ireland, New Zealand, and Pakistan—sealed their places.

Regional Triumphs and Historic Debuts

The regional qualifiers produced some of the most exciting stories and confirmed the final places:

  • Europe: The Netherlands and, for the first time ever in any cricket World Cup, Italy qualified after finishing as the top two teams in the European regional qualifiers.

  • Americas: Canada demonstrated dominance by comfortably winning all six games in the Americas Regional Final on home soil, securing their spot ahead of Bermuda, the Cayman Islands, and the Bahamas.

  • Africa: Zimbabwe and Namibia successfully navigated the competitive Africa Qualifiers in October 2025 to earn their tickets to the main tournament.

  • Asia/EAP: Completing the line-up from the qualification pathway are Nepal, Oman, and UAE from the Asia-EAP Qualifiers.
